Make employees a priority for the success of your business

As a business owner, you want to be successful. You want your business to run smoothly. Customer satisfaction is important to you. Providing a quality product is at the top of your list of goals. You strive to be competent and make your business a positive name in the community. As a business owner, you also know that your employees are important. Without quality employees, your business couldn’t function. You have a duty to provide your employees with a safe, clean and quality work environment.

You will want your employees to be able to work together. It can take a group effort to accomplish goals, solve problems and complete vital tasks.

You may want to help encourage your employees with these strategies:

  • Initiate ice-breaker and communication games. Keep in mind that some employees may not be comfortable participating in games in front of other people. You can make these simple by doing a traditional introduction with each employee. You may send out a survey where each team member answers simple questions about themselves, their interests and reveals fun facts.
  • Assign problem solving activities that are fun and not necessarily work-related. This could mean making the team solve a riddle, solve a scenario-based issue or come together with puzzle pieces to create one cohesive picture.
  • Provide a comfortable environment to talk. This could mean hosting a team lunch where employees can eat and casually chat. You could give employees permission to meet offsite—such as at a coffee shop or restaurant. If plausible, you may provide employees with an area that has comfortable chairs or couches that feel homier and less office-like. Comfortable collaboration space may increase productivity.
  • Initiate employee shadowing programs. Find out what other aspects of the business your employees are interested in. Encourage them to visit other departments and take part in their daily activities to get a better sense of the business and also interact with other team members.
  • Provide mentoring opportunities. It is important that your employees communicate with you as an owner, but you may consider setting your employees up with other members of management.
  • Create goal-oriented evaluations. Set up yearly or monthly goals with your employees. Let them create feasible goals, and lend your support so that they can complete them. Use this information to help conduct reviews with your employees regarding their performance and contributions to the company.

You can help keep employees motivated and happy with some of these suggestions. As a business owner, you will want to make sure that you abide by all Pennsylvania laws regarding your employee hiring, treatment and termination processes.
